The Client

Founded in 1859 as a school of art in the Royal Pavilion’s kitchens, the University of Brighton (UoB) has been an integral part of Brighton and Hove’s landscape. Over a hundred years, UoB has developed into the thriving, diverse, and inclusive institution it is today.

Across its three campuses, 17,000 students enjoy a rich tapestry of subjects, including engineering, medicine, psychology, illustration, sport science, and English literature.

The Project

In 2023, Edward Baden completed a two-phase library relocation project for UoB, sequentially moving 993 linear metres of stock from Falmer Library and 430 linear metres from St Peter’s House Library, both to Aldrich Library.

The Solution

University of Brighton - The Great Move From Falmer Campus Library and St Peter’s House Library To Aldrich Library

Leveraging over 25 years of library relocation expertise, Edward Baden seamlessly completed the two-phase project with minimal disruption to the libraries’ operations. Our expert team were able to curate a bespoke plan, ensuring a smooth relocation and meticulous handling of all library stock throughout the programme.

From initial planning to final completion, Edward Baden managed and coordinated every detail of the move. Our team collaborated closely with the client’s Project Manager to map item locations and provided comprehensive on-site support, including supervision, packing, fitting, portering, vehicle and driver, along with professional equipment and materials.

We maintained constant communication with the site Project Manager, carefully supervised the sequential packing of labeled library stock, and secured a final sign-off upon project completion.

The Process

Building Protection

To prepare for the move, our foreman conducted a Risk Assessment to evaluate the building’s condition. On moving day, the team’s first action upon arrival was to lay protective materials, ensuring the safety of all three locations: the University of Brighton Falmer Campus Library, St Peter’s House Library, and Aldrich Library. Hardboards were laid from the reception and main entrance to vehicle points as well as all main access routes. Lift interiors were protected by use of hardboard and correx and main exit doors were layered with paper covers.

Phase 1: From Falmer Library to Aldrich Library

Secured Plastic Crate With Label

Following the careful application of building protection, the Edward Baden team immediately commenced the sequential packing of 993 linear metres of library stock. Our target was 180 metres per day, utilising robust Easycrates – plastic crates with convenient interlocking lids.

To maintain precise order throughout the relocation, each Easycrate received double labeling, both externally and internally. Furthermore, the label’s position indicated the unpacking start point from left to right, guaranteeing the books were returned in exactly the same way to their designated positions.

Easycrates offered superior protection for the library books during transit compared to traditional cardboard boxes, eliminating the risk of crushing under heavy loads over extended periods. Their stackable design also optimised packing and moving space, proving to be a smart logistical choice.

Our team meticulously packed each shelf location into metre crates, marking the end of each section with an index card. This system ensured the library stock would be transferred and shelved at Aldrich in the original sequential order.

Upon completion of the six-day programme, the team efficiently removed and environmentally disposed of all building protection. The Edward Baden Team Supervisor then conducted a final sign-off with the on-site client representative, confirming the successful completion of all moving tasks to the client’s satisfaction and approval.

Phase 2: From St Peter's House Library to Aldrich Library

Secure Plastic Crates For Moving - Moving Crates - Crate Hire - Crates For Rent

For the 4-day relocation from St Peter’s House to Aldrich, the Edward Baden team followed a similar structured process. Beginning with a site-specific risk assessment and the implementation of protective measures at both locations, the team systematically packed approximately 150 linear metres of library stock per day into durable plastic crates.

The team then efficiently transported these packed crates to the new location, where they unpacked the contents and shelved them according to the established sequence. Following the unpacking, they conducted a final review to ensure client satisfaction before removing all protective materials. Finally, the Edward Baden Supervisor completed a formal sign-off with the on-site representative.
